LOCOMOTION SAG REMINDERS

1.     Please remember it is your responsibility to get the sag gear from the person who sags the week before you.  If you cannot be at the Saturday run to pick up the gear, you are responsible for contacting that person and making arrangements to get the goods.

2.     We are currently using PowerAde.  One pre-packaged bag is enough for 5 gallons, the total the jugs will hold.    You may want to mix less than 5 gallons in the winter, since we seem to use only about half as much.  Joe Larsen requests the Gatorade or PowerAde, as well as the drinking water, be tap water and NOT from the garden hose, please!

3.     It is important that the sag arrive 15 minutes before the starting time of the run.  It is also important to have room for a few passengers should there be runners who need to be caught up w/the main pack or runners who are injured.  An early arrival is important for several reasons:

a.     Eases the VP’s mind to know there will be a sag, and that the sag person has not forgotten or slept in.

b.     Allows runners to put what they need in the sag and to know who the sag person is.

c.      Allows sag to review the course with the President and discuss any issues there may be.

d.     Allows sag to count how many runners are in attendance, so you have an idea of how many & who has made it to each water stop, etc.

4.     Generally, we like to have the water stops every two miles.  On some courses this is not possible due to narrow road shoulders, blind spots, an intersection, etc.  Please use your best judgment in deciding where to pull off, keeping in mind:  SAFETY FIRST.

a.     Always pull off the side of the road where the runners are (to avoid runners crossing the street).

b.     Make sure there is enough room to safely accommodate the runners, the sag gear, your vehicle, etc.

c.      Please turn off your engine at each sag stop.

d.     Help and encourage runners to get in and get out of the water stop quickly  -- handing them cups, spreading gear out, so there is less of a bottleneck to access their needs (tissues, snacks, garbage bin, cup board) – This is tough duty! -- And then shooing them off, reminding runners you only have a window of about 10 minutes before you need to take off for the next stop.

5.     Be mindful of who is in the lead pack and who is at the back.  The sag generally caters to the back of the pack, but if you feel you are at risk of missing the middle of the pack for the next water stop, ask the back of the pack runners to get in your vehicle and catch them up.  If they don’t oblige, they are on their own.

6.     At the end of the run, empty the Gatorade and water jugs, dispose of trash and help transfer the sag gear to the next sag person’s vehicle (and/or to whomever is taking the gear).  Also, remind runners to pick up any items they’ve left in your vehicle.

7.     That’s it!  Thank you for volunteering to sag and stepping up to assist your fellow Locos.  The sag is a key function of our club and we all appreciate everyone who supports it.

Winter Note:  If you’re sagging in the fall or winter months, be sure to dress warmly.  It’s much colder to sag than you think because you’re standing around so much.  Dressing one layer warmer than you normally do will help, along w/wearing warm boots, a hat and gloves!

Summer Note:  If you are sagging in the summer when there are two drivers, each driver should have a cell phone and each other’s number so you can communicate w/each other.

LOCOMOTION Runner's Responsibilities to the SAG:

1.  If you are diverting AT ALL from the designated running route (i.e. turning around early, taking a short cut or taking a potty stop, etc.), it is your responsibility to let someone know and have them tell the person who is sagging.

2.  Please be considerate of your fellow Locos at the sag stops.  This means "get in and out" of the stops quickly, move out of the way as soon as you've gotten your drink and/or Gatorade.  Be conscious of limiting your visiting -- chat on the run, instead of at the water jugs, the sag person has a very short time to provide assistance for everyone and then needs to move on in order to be able to catch the lead runners.

3.  If you fall behind for some reason and are asked by the sag person to get in their vehicle so they can catch you up to the main group, please oblige or know that you will be on your own for the remainder of the run.

Sagging is a benefit of the club we all enjoy and dare say; take for granted at times (until it is our turn to sag). It is a big responsibility for the person/s sagging and can be stressful.  If we can all be mindful of our "Runner Responsibilities" to the sag, things should go more smoothly for our sag person.  Also, please remember to thank the person who sags!
